Acupuncture Treats A Variety of Health Conditions

"I came to Dr. Joe a broken person. Years of a painful lip allergy that every dermatologist in Franklin brushed off as dermatitis. Years of medications and steroids that never helped. When I walked in his office there was no doubt I was in the place that God led me to. He told me that after 7 days I would have relief. I woke up on the 7th morning and I was pain free for the 1st time in 6 years. I cannot stress enough how amazed I am. I feel like a completely different person. I will refer him to everyone I know." - Hope R.

"I came to see Dr. Joe because I had been experiencing long covid for nearly 3 months that had essentially attacked my central nervous system. I had severe anxiety that came with this in addition to nausea, loss of taste and smell-and appetite, trouble sleeping, and a vibrating in my chest. Needless to say it was extremely disruptive to my life. After just 6 session all of my symptoms are gone except the anxiety - but that is significantly less severe. I went from having panic attacks a few times a week and not wanting to leave my house to feeling a little anxious from time to time. I am still in treatment and will be until the anxiety is gone. Dr. Joe knows what he is doing and he is very honest about the length of treatment and the outcome. This is not an overnight cure, but I am so impressed with how quickly I am feeling better. With each treatment I see improvement and I have a sense of hope that I did not have when I started seeing Dr. Joe." - C. Barlow

How Acupuncture Treat Pain

One theory is that acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers. Endorphins bind to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, reducing pain signals that are transmitted from the body to the brain.

Another theory is that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, which regulate pain and mood. Acupuncture may also activate the body's immune system, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.

Recent studies have also shown that acupuncture may activate specific areas of the brain that are involved in pain perception and processing. Functional MRI studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can modulate activity in the limbic system, prefrontal cortex, and other regions of the brain that are associated with pain.

Overall, the exact mechanisms by which acupuncture works to relieve pain are still being studied and understood. However, there is increasing evidence that acupuncture can be an effective treatment for various types of pain, including chronic pain conditions such as back pain, arthritis, and headaches.

How Acupuncture Works

From a scientific perspective, acupuncture works through several mechanisms, including:

  1. Stimulation of the nervous system: Acupuncture has been shown to activate nerve fibers and trigger the release of pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory chemicals, such as endorphins, in the body.

  2. Modulation of the immune system: Acupuncture has been shown to influence the activity of immune cells, such as T cells and cytokines, and help regulate the immune system.

  3. Regulation of blood flow: Acupuncture has been shown to increase blood flow to specific areas of the body, which can help improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

  4. Activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis: Acupuncture has been shown to activate the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is a complex network of hormones that helps regulate stress and physiological responses to stress.

  5. Alteration of brain activity: Acupuncture has been shown to alter brain activity, including changes in brain wave patterns and the release of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, which can help regulate pain, mood, and sleep.

While the exact mechanism by which acupuncture activates the nervous system is not well understood, it is clear that this practice can have a significant impact on the nervous system and can help to reduce pain, improve circulation, and enhance overall well-being. Studies are being conducted to better understand the mechanisms of action of acupuncture and its effects on the nervous system.
